“Are you in there?” Eunice Harper Higgins
Eunice was the character Carol Brunette played in the cast of “Mama’s Family” on her show. She could be feisty and onery, and so coming from her “Are you in there,” was more of an accusation than a question. Yet, I still laugh because at times when an interaction feels exasperating, I want to take on the sneery tone of Eunice and ask the other person “Are you in there!!??” But when I look at the question as I am right now, feeling at peace with myself and others, I see that Eunice could possibly have been a metaphysician.
When someone is behaving at a lower energy level, instead of seeing them as being that behavior, I know that they are in fact not their behavior. One of the first sentences I learned to speak as a child was: “I am a perfect child of God.” But when my mother punished me, I would ask her why since I am perfect. She told me, “You are perfect, but your behavior is not perfect.” When I remember this, I know that the person I’m looking at with judgment and impatience is not who they are; inside they are another perfect child of God.
Perhaps Eunice knew this as well when she asked “Are you in there?” Maybe she wasn’t making an accusation that the lights are on but no one’s home, but instead asking, “Where are you behind that behavior?” Just think if we could look at others when their behavior upsets or displeases us with compassion, silently asking them “Are you in there?” Making this inquiry with a calm mind would mean that we’re sincerely wanting to see something other than their distracting conduct, that we want to see the Truth of who they are. And, because we are all one on the unseen side of life, we’re also wanting to see the Truth of who we are as well.
When we ask someone – or ourselves – “Are you in there?” with an open heart, we’re seeking to know the Truth that is inside each and everyone of us. This is the Truth that we are all God’s beloved whom God has created out of its love, into its love. We are all love unfolding love, even if at times we can’t see this so clearly because of our own or others actions. But when we see with laser eyesight clarity from the heart, we can see the Truth that “Yes, I am in there. Yes, I am here. Yes, you are in there. Yes, you are here.” We are there, and here, and now, and everywhere, all One as individualized expressions of God as I AM.
